Fat: Menace or a Miracle

From the above heading you would be thinking that “how fat could be a miracle for us”. Till the end of the article you will know the benefits of dietary fats and how important it is in our diet and for the functioning of our body. Since childhood we have been taught that don’t eat food which has high fat contents like butter, cheese, cream, ghee and fatty meats. Instead of these eat fruits and vegetables and grains to stay slim and healthy. Current scenario speaks volumes; you can see people consuming food with less fat but still getting diagnosed by severe metabolic diseases like obesity and diabetes.

Why is it happening? And why we are getting fatter and prone to severe diseases day by day? Why the rates in case of diabetes are are still increasing instead of reducing. There will be doubts coming in your mind right now. So a simple answer to all your questions will be that – We have been given wrong guidelines regarding dietary fats.

Fats played a crucial part in evolution of human race. During Stone Age period, there were no farming, no fruits available throughout the year. It was found only in some particular seasons .As a source of carbohydrates there was only tubers and leaves and there were animals which gave them meat and fats. Since the availability of food was not there for always, they used to starve for days and weeks unless they hunt some animals or steal them from others. Even though these people were consuming good amounts of animals fats and meats and small amounts of tubers and roots they lived their life very nicely without any medical ailment which we don’t see in the current world today. After the humans started agriculture, diseases also started to evolve gradually. People were still eating good amount of fats and meat along with bread and were munching on sugar till the late 1930’s. But due to post World War 1, there was shortage of food for people and this advantage was taken by the cereal companies like Kellogg’s and Quaker’s to expand their territories. They played a great role in saving lives of the people but it came with a huge cost. People suffered from cardiovascular disease and rate of deaths begin to rise. The main turn came in 1970 when Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) under the US Department of Agriculture declared that “Fat causes heart attack”, but they were wrong. Influx of high amount of sugar was responsible for cardiovascular disease and heart attacks. This gave rise to low fat products like low fat biscuits or we usually know them as digestive biscuits, low fat yogurt, etc. The rate of cardiovascular disease skyrocketed after 1970’s. It was also the beginning of fitness industry because people were getting fatter day by day and they wanted to lose weight, so the only way to lose weight was GYM, which is not necessary. The rate of CVD (cardiovascular disease) was not high before the 19th century because people were still eating ample amount of fat and meat to stabilize the blood sugar. It acts as a barrier to stop the destruction of carbohydrates. But when the fat or else I call it as a barrier was removed from our diet, the destruction of carbohydrates led our body more prone to diseases which were uncommon in nature. For e.g. Diabetes was rare before the beginning of 19th century and now 3 out of 1 person is suffering from diabetes or any other metabolic disorder.

So finally what to do now? Very simple, just reverse the diet pyramid. The typical diet pyramid we are following is the (high carbohydrate-low protein-low fat) which has ruined our functioning of our body. So just by simply reversing the diet by (high fat-moderate protein-low carb) will give immense amount of energy, completely cut off the risk of getting cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular  disease, PCOS ,less hunger pangs ,lose body fat without exercising because due to cutting down of carbohydrates it will make your body to use body fat as a source of energy.

This type of diet is actually needed in today’s world because people are still munching on high sugar/carbohydrate foods and then paying tremendous amount of money to doctor to remove fat through medicines, liposuction and bariatric surgery which is wasting their time and money. By restricting carbohydrates from our diet you will get all the benefits given above and many others. About 50 lacs of people in India die due to diabetes. Do you think they would be on high fat diet? The answer is absolutely NO. Most of the people, who die, die due to any heart disease, their cholesterol levels were less than the normal levels, even though doctors are blaming fat for the cause of death.

So proved, dietary fat is not the culprit, carbohydrates are the culprit which made our life miserable. For once if we think that, if fats are so bad for our body then we won’t be existing right now. Evolution of human race would have never happened. Our body is made up of protein and fats .So you can use your common sense that how fats and proteins are important for normal functioning of our body.

Fats have basically 4 categories. They are:

Monounsaturated Fats- They are the good fats which are beneficial for your body. Liquid at room temperature and solid when they are chilled. Examples are olive oil, nuts, avocados, etc. Consuming them leads to weight loss, belly fat loss, less risk of getting heart disease and other diseases.

Polyunsaturated Fats- They are also the healthy fats along with monounsaturated fats. Polyunsaturated fats include omega-3 and omega-6 fats. These are essential fatty acids that the body needs for brain function and cell growth. Our bodies DO NOT make essential fatty acids, so you can only get them from food. Examples are Fish, Walnut seeds, flax seeds, etc.

Saturated Fats- They are the bad boys but used widely around the globe. Thy majority come mainly from animal sources, including meat and dairy products. Examples are- Butter, beef, pork, etc.

They are the one which are highly associated with diseases. Replacing foods that are high in saturated fat with healthier options can lower blood cholesterol levels and improve lipid profiles.

Trans Fats- They are the one which gives your food the perfect taste. Trans fats raise your bad (LDL) cholesterol levels and lower your good (HDL) cholesterol levels. Trans-fat can be found in many foods including packaged food, fast food etc. Most commons are pizzas, doughnuts, fries, etc.

It’s time to uncover the truth about dietary fat and make people aware about the benefits of this miraculous elixir. What is more important ? It’s that consuming right amount of fat at right time with appropriate quantity.

Famous American blogger and author Jimmy Moore quote’s “Eating carbohydrates makes you hungry. If you don’t eat carbohydrates there is no hunger. So what are you waiting for ? Switch to consuming good fats and stay fit.
